The UMass Symphony Band, under the direction of Dr. James Patrick Miller, is a professional training ensemble for future music educators and performers. Symphony Band also offers students of all majors (open by audition) the opportunity to participate in and perform contemporary and traditional wind band repertoire. This ensemble balances artistic vision and educational techniques with excellence in performance, especially assisting the Symphony Band's many members studying music education in developing teaching philosophies and professional strategies for their future careers. The Symphony Band meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30pm-4:10pm, and performs four full concerts each academic year. These performances are supplemented by appearances in such events as the Multibands Pops Concert in the fall and the Pops Gala in the spring. Members of Symphony Band also reach out into the community through volunteer work with the Registered Student Organization affiliated with the ensemble, MassWinds.
